Due to the strong maritime tradition of the inhabitants of the island and their industrious fishing activities, some of the most delicious and unique dishes to be found anywhere on the Atlantic coast can be enjoyed by the visitor to San Fernando. There is also a huge selection of wayside inns and restaurants where the local catch can be savoured in the most traditional and appetising ways. Cumin, oregano, vinegar, garlic, oil and home-grown salt are used to produce a fried fish dish called bienmesabe which is loved by one and all and so popular the dish, on any occasion, that, along with cañaillas and fish from the fish farms it is at the very heart of the local gastronomic tradition.
